Steroid injections for Hip pain- Rebecca’s Story

Hip pain can be debilitating and prevent you from doing the sport you love or even just walk around the park. There are many causes of hip pain including, labral tear, arthritis, hip flexor or adductor tendinopathy and stress injuries.  In this video, we sit down with Rebecca to discuss her hip pain history and why she had a steroid injection to help her return to running.  Rebecca gives us insight into her rehabilitation and what prompted further investigation and eventually further intervention.

Why a steroid injection?

Steroid injections are often prescribed to alleviate the pain and inflammation in a joint. Rebecca had tried Physiotherapy rehabilitation exercises and had also tried various remedies, including rest and anti-inflammatory medications but she was still troubled rolling in bed at night. Her ambition was to return to running so was exploring every option to achieve this.

We delve into the details of her condition and the various investigations before she ultimately decided to proceed with a steroid injection into the hip joint.

Research:

Intra-articular injections of corticosteroids into the hip joint have been shown to reduce symptoms of Osteoarthritis (Creamer, 1999).

Chandrasekaran et al (2016) looked at the evidence surrounding injections into the hip joint to alleviate pain in Osteoarthritis. They found that a steroid injection was more beneficial than Hyaluronic acid or Platelet Rich Plasma Injections (PRP).

A steroid injection is not a cure to an arthritic joint but it may give you a therapeutic window in which to rehabilitate or perform the exercise that you wish to pursue. It may alleviate symptoms enough to buy you more time until you are due to have a joint replacement.

How do you get a cortisone injection in the hip?

It is best to first get your diagnosis. This may be in the form of an x-ray or in Rebeccas case, she had an MRI followed by a consultant review. During the assessment with the consultant, it was decided to manage with steroid injections until she is ready for full hip replacement.

We also ask Rebecca about the injection process- was it painful? Was it scary? What should someone expect during the procedure?

Finally, we ask Rebecca about how she has been feeling since the injection and if she has returned to regular sport again. She summarises with how the whole process felt for her and what you should expect if you are thinking about having a steroid injection in the hip.
